Sizzler to Petition Council For Flag Murals, Outdoor BBQ

Owners of the recently revamped restaurant want the OK to use outdoor grills and display large murals on the outer walls.

The recent renovation of the El Toro Road is incomplete without American flag murals on its outer walls and a row of barbecues near its front door, claim its owners.

Owners Gary and Sally Myers are petitioning the Lake Forest City Council to reverse a denying their wish to install Americana-themed wall displays and an outside grilling area.

At previous meetings with city officials, the are essential components of the restaurant's "New Generation" revamp.

At the City Council's Tuesday evening meeting, the Myers are scheduled to request that officials allow them to put up two murals—one above the restaurant's main entrance and another facing El Toro Road—that display digital graphics of the American flag, cowboy boots and a cowboy hat.

The Myers will also request that the city approve an outdoor barbecue area with removable grills where staff can cook tri-tip.

Commissioners previously determined that the murals are to large to fit within the local signage ordinance and that the barbecues aren't compatible with zoning laws.

Because of the proximity of the outdoor grill area to the El Toro Road sidewalk, the barbecues could also potentially pose a hazard, the commission decided. City staffers recommend that the council uphold the commission's initial ruling.

But two council members—Councilwoman  and Mayor Pro Tem —have both also appealed the commission's ruling alongside Sizzler, signaling their support for the plans.

The City Council meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in , 25550 Commercentre Drive.
