Head's Up, Sept. 10: School Begins, and 'Roo Burgers

Items of interest and other notes for Lake Forest-area residents.

By Martin Henderson

What's coming up and going down this week in the Lake Forest and Foothill Ranch areas.

• In the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, Tuesday is the first day of school. That means kids walking to school, people using sidewalks and crosswalks, and other drivers making moves they might not normally make once they get back into the swing of things. Be extra cautious and pay attention, on the road and in class. If you take photos, email them to martin.henderson@patch.com for a gallery of the big day (but be sure to specify which school).

• After dropping the kids off at school, it might be worthwhile to head to Saddleback Hospital where Dr. Dung Trinh will discuss the pros and cons of medical herbs and supplements.

• Tempted to eat an exotic meat such as, say, kangaroo? Patch reporter Rich Kane takes on the Burger of the Month at Slater's 50/50 in Lake Forest.

• Got a tree that needs pruning. Our Smart Spending feature provides the info on tree trimming. Find out if it will cost you a limb to have your limbs trimmed.

• Santiago Canyon Road claimed the life of a teen girl when a car occupied young people crashed. The CHP indicates they were driving too fast, and alcohol may have played a part.

• Here's kind of an odd and tragic story: A man died when his vehicle fell from the Barranca Parkway overpass onto Interstate 5.

• Cal Worthington died on his ranch in northern California. The flamboyant car salesman was 92.
