Area Company Behind Friday's 'Go Skateboarding Day'

There's days for just about everything, including an excuse to hijack your kid's skateboard.

Are you ready to go skateboarding?

The annual excuse to go to the skate park and take the chance of falling in public without too much collateral damage—at least to the ego—is less than a week away.

The 10th anniversary of Go Skateboarding Day is June 21, when skateboarders around the globe—and those who may want to test their kid's wheels—will celebrate the exhilaration and creativity of one of the extreme sports.

There are a couple of local skateboard parks, at Cañada Vista Park in Rancho Santa Margarita and Etnies Skateparkin Lake Forest.

The event was founded by the Rancho Santa Margarita-based International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC), which will host and participate in a series of premiere events in Washington D.C. This includes a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution's Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, which recently launched a broad collecting initiative focusing on skateboarding and skate culture. As part of that effort, the Lemelson Center and IASC, are hosting Innoskate—a major public festival exploring innovation through the lens of skate culture.

With the Washington Monument as a backdrop, Innoskate will take place on and near a skate ramp built facing the National Mall on the National Museum of American History’s plaza. Celebrating skateboarding’s constant push for progression, leading figures from skating’s history and current pro skateboarders will present and discuss innovations in skate culture. Innoskate will feature skate demonstrations, panel discussions, films, donations of skate objects to national collections, and other programs that highlight the impact of skateboarding’s innovations in American culture.

In addition, there will be a variety of key events happening around the world in celebration of Go Skating Day, which can be procured through the Know Skateboarding phone app atknowskateboarding.com.
