Community Celebration Today to Honor Former Navy Seal Killed in Libya

Residents are invited to pay their respects to Glen Doherty today at 5 p.m. on Rodney Avenue off Encinitas Boulevard in New Encinitas.

The community is invited to gather today in New Encinitas to celebrate the life of Glen Doherty, a local former Navy SEAL who was among the four Americans killed Sept. 12 during an attack against the United States Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Although the attack began on September 11, Doherty fought throughout the night and saved many lives before succumbing to a mortar attack in the early hours of September 12, according to a news release from event organizers.

Residents will gather at 5 p.m. on Rodney Avenue near Village Park to honor the life and service of Doherty. Everyone will gather on the block where Doherty lived for several years, and all of Rodney Avenue will be shut down during the informal gathering.  The memorial is open to anyone who would like to pay their respects, and several of Doherty’s family members and close friends are expected to be in attendance.

In addition to Friday’s event, Doherty’s sister Katie Quigley has just launched The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation. According to its website, the “Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation is our way to honor Glen’s life and his beliefs. Glen believed in education, improving oneself and building skills." It goes on to explain that the mission of the foundation is to “pay it forward, to spread Glen’s love and passion for life to as many individuals as possible.”
