MLK Holiday: A ‘Day On, Not a Day Off’

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only holiday declared as a national day of service. Here's how to find local volunteer opportunities.

When President Obama is sworn in for his second term on Monday, the nation will also be honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement he led before his voice was silenced by an assassin’s bullet in 1968.

A federal holiday since 1983, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was later designated as a national day of service, the only holiday with that distinction. Just as King dedicated his life to serving communities struggling to overcome injustices, the holiday bearing his name is intended to be “a day on, not a day off.”

Projects big and small will be underway Monday all over the United States, with volunteers spending the day cleaning public parks, collecting clothes and food for needy families, visiting senior centers and other opportunities to give back to the community.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is the federal agency that has coordinated MLK Day projects since Congress declared it a national day of service in 1994. President Obama’s United We Serve community-service initiative has joined the agency in promoting the first holiday of the year as a day to give back.

Yes, times have sure changed. Today we have a Kenyan living in the White House and hardly anyone bats an eyelash. Who woulda thunk? A major LE agency (the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office) did a 6-mo investigation on both his birth certificate and selective service registration card and found both to be frauds. This is a legitimate LE agency that investigates fraudulent documents all the time. The outcome of the investigation was publicly disclosed. It's on youtube if you care to watch. Anything goes. The US Constitution is merely wood pulp.

It's all a conspiracy by the one world order. Watch out for the black helicopters.

and don't forget to wear your tinfoil hat.

A 6-mo investigation by a legitimate law enforcement agency that conducts investigations on fraudulent documents as part of it's routine business is 'black helicopter' or 'tin-foil hat' stuff?? Since when?? I know how easy it is for you to dismiss FACTUAL forensic evidence. Again, the hour and a half video presented by a licensed attorney which provided a DETAILED analysis outcome of the investigation's findings can be found in the public domain. Do FACTS scare you??? Is that why you attack those who merely explain that such an investigation has occurred and is available for public viewing??? Fear of the truth is a terrible thing to live with. I sympathize.

Are you out of your freaking mind??? You don't really believe anything that comes out of that part of the country do you? You're comparing some of the best minds in the country to a pis-ant county with the kind of ass-backwards politics and the crazy old sheriff in that county? Major LE agency? LMFAO!!! I notice that you didn't supply a link so all of us could read the results of the investigation. Afraid to give it out? Typical...
JustUs January 21, 2013 at 04:19 PM
John jona, did you actually watch the 1.5 hour presentation of the findings of that 6-mo scientific forensic investigation of Obama's BC and selective service registration card by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office? It's on youtube. That's the same kind of investigation that would be done on ANY fraudulent document used during the commission of a crime for submission as evidence to a judge and jury in a court of law. In fact, it was MUCH MORE THOROUGH than a typical investigation. No rocks were left unturned. Naturally, you can't dispute anything in that video presentation or in the findings. Everything they said made perfect sense, especially if you know anything about how computer generated documents are formatted. Obama's selective service registration card was a slam dunk. Absolutely NO DOUBT whatsoever about that one. It's as fraudulent as a 3-dollar bill. All you can do is make bogus generalizations without an substantiation. Your kind are a dime a dozen.

Hard to get upset about the birthers anymore. Even if it were one tiny slice of a massive conspiracy, Hawai'i birth certificate authenticity would be the least of Barrack Obama's problems. See the massive gaseous inflation of multiple conspiracy bubbles link: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/10/chart-obama-conspiracy-theories Totally unnecessary. You had me at "Koranic verses inscribed on his ring",....you had me at "Koranic verses inscribed on his ring"!

Sorry, mfriedrich. I would trust the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office before I would trust the MotherJones website. The sheriff's office does investigations on fraudlent documents as part of their routine business. They showed strong probable cause that Obama's BC was computer generated. If you knew anything about how these things work and watched the findings of their investigation it would be obvious to you (provided that you had a open mind - which I believe you don't based on our previous discussions). And a 3rd grader could understand why Obama's selective service registration card is a total fake. You don't even have to have computer expertise to understand that one. heh. It's a total fraud. If a jury looked at those documents and heard the evidence and they belonged to some unconnected schmoe on the street he would be found guilty of document fraud within 2 hours of deliberation. But since Obama did it no one wants to speak the truth. heh. That's how the nation is ruled in 2012.

LOL JustUs, I know man. It went right over your head, like pretty much everything else in this reality of life we call the universe. The motherjones site link was added by me simply to demonstrate the breadth and depth of the scrap heap of conspiracy theories thrown on the President since 2009. What's shown there are actual claims. They are ludicrous, stupid and hilarious all at once, not unlike your frequent contributions here on LF Patch, but I digress.... Meanwhile, not so Kenyan as it turns out. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/apr/07/donald-trump/donald-trump-says-president-obamas-grandmother-cau/ http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/mar/02/mike-huckabee/mike-huckabee-said-barack-obama-was-born-kenya/ Don't tell me. I know. You'd believe Donald Trump and Mike Huckabee well before an independent website like Politifact.com. LOL

Sorry, I don't read 'politifact' any more since it recently conceded that their "lie of the year' for 2012 turned out to be TRUE!!! hah. :^) I only read verified stuff, like the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office 6-mo investigation of Obama's BC and selective service registration card, both containing indisputable scientific and forensic evidentiary indication of being fraudulent. heh. Go look at the 1.5 hour presentation of the investigation's findings if you disbelieve me. heh. The proof is in the pudding. heh. Btw, here is the link showing the credibility, or lack thereof, of 'Politifact: http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/whoops-politifacts-lie-year-turns-out-be-true_696223.html Enjoy! heh. :^)

Uh-oh! http://crooksandliars.com/news-hound-ellen/fox-pretends-romney-s-jeeps-china Yes, JustUs get's his "facts" wrong. Again. mfriedrich, are you really debating this tinfoil hat wearing sociopath?
JustUs January 22, 2013 at 07:33 AM
hey met00, instead of just tossing links up on the board with information that is unverifiable - why don't you simply answer my questions (one on one) or respond directly to the FACTS that I post like I do yours? You skeerd? I could post links all day long too. But it really serves no purpose if I fail to take your questions and claims - and respond to them one after another. The FACT is I backed you chumps into the corner so links is all you got left. heh. Be a man. Take my comments POINT BY POINT like I do yours. Put on your big boy pants for once. heh. ;^)
JustUs January 22, 2013 at 07:38 AM
Btw, met00 - what don't you understand about Politifact CONCEDING that their 'lie of the year' for 2012 was actually TRUE??? Can't you read? They already CONCEDED and ADMITTED that they were wrong. heh. READ THE STATEMENT!!!! heh. My God. Are you that far in denial??? heh.
