Pet of the Week: A Dog and a Cat, Mature but Still Fun

These two need a home.

She’s got style, she’s got grace, she’s a Lady. This 8-year-old black Labrador retriever, who was found as a stray, is a sweetheart, say volunteers at Orange County Animal Care. She is mature, it’s true, but Paul Anka’s “She’s a Lady” lyrics spell out a notable truth about ladies like this: “I can leave her on her own, knowing she’s OK alone, and there’s no messing.” Young Labs are known for their destructive antics, but by the time they reach Lady’s age, they are calm companions. Like all Labs, this sweet, spayed female enjoys going for walks, but she’s equally happy to sit by your side.

Labradors are kindly, intelligent, outgoing and eager to please. It’s that disposition that makes the breed a popular family dog, but it takes a good three years of a rambunctious puppyhood and lots of kind, consistent training before a Lab reaches that ideal. Although Labs eventually calm down, they often maintain their puppy-like enthusiasm for, well, everything throughout life. Labs have a dense, weather-resistant coat that is easy to groom, but like all dogs, they shed.

To see Lady and get to know her better, visit her at Orange County Animal Care, 561 The City Drive South, in Orange. Her ID number is A1076972. Lady has lots of love to share and is looking for a family to call her own. Could it be yours?

Looking for a cat instead? Meet Hamm. And he is one, shelter volunteers say. This good-looking 5-year-old brown and white tabby lives up to his name because he absolutely loves attention. He’ll roll onto his back for a belly rub and loves having his neck scratched. The neutered domestic shorthair is very affectionate, making him the perfect family cat. Come check him out! His ID number is A1076156.

Trivia: For the 20th consecutive year, the Labrador retriever has been the most popular breed in the United States.
