A man and woman in their 60s were killed Tuesday in Irvine when a car driven by a teenage boy veered off the road and plowed into them, police said.
The names of the victims, both Irvine residents, were withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The 65-year-old man and 61-year-old woman were walking on the east side of Eastwood near the Venta Spur trail north of Bryan Avenue when they were struck by a Honda about 7:30 a.m., said Irvine police Lt. Julia Engen.
The man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at an area hospital and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 17-year-old boy, was unhurt, Engen said.
The teen was driving to school when he veered off the road for unknown reasons, she said. The Honda struck the victims before slamming into a retaining wall and a tree, Engen said.
Anyone with information about the collision was asked to call Sgt. Matt August at 949-724-7023.
