Starbucks to Start Serving Beer, Wine

The chain announced Monday that it will add alcohol to the menu at some of its Southern California shops by the end of the year.

A handful of Starbucks cafes in Southern California will be adding alcohol to the menu by the end of the year, the coffee giant announced Monday.

Along with beer and wine, the selected shops will also be offering new food options and flexible seating to accomodate larger groups, according to a statement on the Seattle-based company's website.

The unidentified cafes in Southern California cafes where Starbucks plans to add wine and beer to the menu will join five Starbucks in the Seattle area and one in Portland, OR, that are already serving the hard stuff. A number of stores in Chicago and Atlanta will also be adding alcohol to the menu by the end of 2012.

Four to six Southern California cafes will be selected to serve beer, wine and new food offerings. Starbucks has not yet said which shops will get the menu additions.

The list of wine and beer at each Starbucks will be selected to reflect local customer tastes, and will be refined over time, the company said.
