Expanded Foothill Ranch Walmart Opens Wednesday

Construction expands the Lake Forest store to nearly 175,000 square feet, adding a full line of groceries.

The newly expanded Walmart in Foothill Ranch will make its official debut Wednesday with a grand reopening ceremony.

The 48,000-square-foot expansion, , adds a full complement of groceries to the Foothill Ranch store. The store, at 26502 Towne Centre Dr., will celebrate the addition with a morning ribbon-cutting attended by city officials.

“We are thrilled that Walmart is further investing in our community by adding groceries to its Foothill Ranch store,” said Lake Forest Mayor Kathryn McCullough in a statement. “Our residents will now have more shopping choices, and our city will benefit from the increased business activity at Walmart, including the creation of 85 new jobs, and surrounding businesses. The addition of groceries to the Walmart store is truly a win-win for the community.”

The new grocery section includes fresh produce; a bakery and deli, meat and dairy products; and full liquor sales. According to store manager Gail Bell, the expansion has created 85 new jobs.

Product samplings and giveaways, as well as appearances by characters such as the Coca-Cola polar bear, will take place at the store Wednesday. The grand-opening celebration will continue Saturday. All events are family-friendly, free and open to the public.

As part of the store's reopening, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are giving approximately $25,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations, including $15,800 for Children’s Hospital of Orange County, $5,000 to the California Congress of Parents, Teachers and Students and $4,250 to the Arthritis Foundation of Orange County.

In addition, the store plans to distribute $10,000 in grants to several local organizations in the coming weeks.

The store is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.

I've been waiting for this since moving to Foothill Ranch 15 years ago! Having just Ralph's and their high prices and less than stellar produce to chose from has finally come to an end! I will shop only Walmart Super Center from now on! One stop shop. I have already been thrilled with the large choice of their expanded grocery and frozen section. Today they are offering the fresh meat, produce, bakery, and deli! Thank you for bringing more jobs and revenue to our community!

Will it finally be open 24hours a day, though? 85 more jobs seems like it would cover that. I have seen the zillion new registers installed (with only 1 or 2 open at any one time, though - baffling). Time will tell if it is indeed 'better'. The groceries were moved off to the NOrthernmost edge of the store. Now, when my wife sends me to get some essentials, it take me a considerable bit longer to get around the store to the grocery area, then back to the other side to the register, then back out again the other side to get to my car. I would have thought they'dve put things like baby / pet stuff, clothes, and seasonal items in that area to afford a quicker in / out experience for the average consumer.

There's a reason Sarah, it just escapes me for now. I believe because it's too close to residence? Not sure but I'll ask my sis who is a dept mgr there. I'm happy regardless. I park by grocery, go in the health and beauty side, work my way towards grocery because I have pets too. If you plan it right it works out great! We don't need 24/7 anyway. We are a bedroom community!

I feel this is just another nail in the coffin of home value and quality of life. You don't see these types of stores in highly valued areas such as irvine and Newport. I'd rather see trader joes and whole foods or mothers market. I will never shop walmart again here if I can help it.
