CVLegends Thanksgiving Food Drive

Putting the "drive" back into food drive, CVLegends are working to make sure all families in Castro Valley can have a happy Thanksgiving.

I have come to the conclusion that CVLegends works best when CVLegends is involved in the community. Online is a great place to share memories, but real life is actually where we create those memories; and sometimes, folks need a little help making those memories happy. Don’t worry, I’m not getting all touchy feely, I still basically just want to talk about donuts, or garage bands, or the reason you were nicknamed “Stumpy” in elementary school. But I have personally committed myself to do more for Castro Valley than just talk.

So, without further ado, let me announce the beta version of the CVLegends Food Drive.

Here’s the deal, I have decided to put the “drive” back in food drive. Next Friday,  11/16, I will drive to any Castro Valley house that would like to donate.  I have a truck and a vision, I would like to see the entire bed of that truck filled with non-perishable food items. I want the CVLegend community to literally donate a truck full of food so everyone in our town can have a rad Thanksgiving dinner.

If you would like to donate, which you would, you really really would, I need you to email me at CVLegends@gmail.com We can set up a pickup time over email, I have the entire day off work, so it can be anytime throughout the day. If you cannot donate on Friday I will look into setting up a collection box on my front porch (remember this is the beta version, details still need to be worked out) so you can donate throughout the week. If I am lucky enough to be overwhelmed with donations I may need to solicit other drivers on Friday, if you would like to volunteer to drive please email me as well, (beta version, details, blah blah blah.)

And what do you get from donating, besides being an awesome person? First, as long as my supplies hold out, CVLegends stickers, you don’t need to answer a question or stroke my ego- just donate food. Secondly, I will draw one name from all of the food donators to win a 2013 Worthington Photography Calendar. (If any other local businesses want to offer incentives, please let me know.) Thirdly, did I mention you would be an awesome person?

What type of food should you think about donating, I’m sure that jar of pigs feet in the back of your cabinet somebody gave you as a gag gift a decade ago is delicious, but something that special you should really keep for yourself. I am looking for the non-perishable basics, prepare for a long boring list: basics like:

Aluminum roasting pans

Applesauce

Baked Beans

Canned corn

Canned cranberries

Canned fruit

Canned green beans

Canned ham (5lbs)

Canned mixed veggies

Canned olives

Canned peas

Canned potatoes

Canned soups

Canned tomatoes

Canned yams

Chili

Cornbread mix

Dinner napkins

Dried pasta

Flour

Gravy/can or jar

Holiday cookies

Jello

Large fruit juice

Pickles

Rice

Scalloped Potatoes

Sparkling cider

Stuffing/box or bag

Sugar

I will update this article with details as I figure them out, in the meantime, if you would like to donate, please email, CVLegends@gmail.com Let’s all work together to ensure that everyone in Castro Valley can have a happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you and good day.

Update 11-12-12

If you would like to submit a monetary donation you can send it to: 4431 James Ave, Castro Valley, CA 94546- make checks payable to Castro Valley Outreach. If you would like to drop donations off at my home prior to Friday there will be a donation box on my front porch at 3995 Mabel Ave (directly across the street from the high school pool). If you donate at my home, please let me know so I can put you in the drawing for the Worthington Calendar.

Finally, items of particular import are as follows:

Please be aware that Saturday is the pickup date for Scouting for Food, by far the LARGEST food drive in the country and the LARGEST single point drive for the Alameda County Food Bank. If you see bags left out with the Scouting for Food door hanger on them, please let the Scouts assigned to that area colllect. And, anyone that puts out food on Saturday for the Scouts that doesnt' have a door hanger, they start picking up around 9:00am.

Thomas, I am in no way competing with the Boy Scouts, nor would I think to take donations that were set out for them. Thank you to the scouts who are collecting food.
