PHOTOS: 'Pool' at Etnies Skatepark Extension Takes Shape

One of the skate park's new features, modeled after a backyard pool, is being formed this week.

It looks like a pool—entrance steps and drainage pipes included—but it won't be filled with chlorinated water.

One of the features being built as part of the extension is modeled after a backyard pool in Irvine that drew skateboarders to its curved planes, according to Lake Forest's skate park coordinator Nick Gates.

The framework of the pool was covered with concrete, sprayed from a hose, in a two-part effort Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, half the feature was covered in concrete and smoothed out. Wednesday morning, the second half was similarly treated, concluding the basic concrete work for the pool.

Work moves rapidly because by noon, the concrete that had been sprayed at about 8 a.m. had hardened, and any imperfections are there to stay, Gates said.

Fortunately, the company, California Skateparks, is the best in the business, he said.

The company's employees take painstaking care to pack down the concrete to burst any air bubbles lurking beneath the surface and smooth it down repeatedly, ensuring that the end result is eminently skateable, he said.

The park's 13,000-square-foot extension is on track for a mid-August grand opening.
