Skatepark Add-ons More Than Half Done

The expansion project, which will make the park one of the largest in the world, is on track for an August opening.

Skateboarders rejoice: The 13,000-square-foot, $900,000 expansion of is on track for a grand opening in mid- to late August.

Approved by the Lake Forest City Council in October, the months-long construction project is now more than halfway complete, skate park coordinator Nick Gates said Monday.

The few changes to construction plans have been minor tweaks that will make the bumps and contours of the park even more skateable, he said.

Already a skateboarding destination ("Just this morning I had a group of guys from Maryland come by to skate," Gates said), the park figures to grow in popularity with its new features.

It's likely that the opening celebration will attract local pro skateboarders, Gates said.

In the meantime, skateboarders and BMX riders are still out in force at the park.

The spring hours of operation will lengthen in June.
