Update on the Dogs and Ducks

Chances of a dog park for Lake Forest improved greatly at the Thursday meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) when the Commissioners were unanimous in selecting Darrin Park as the best choice (Click here for background on the selection process).

Darrin is a 3.1 acre site located at the Eastern end of Cherry Avenue, past Trabuco, making it reasonably well located. It has a large dedicated parking area and the ideal section is far enough away from homes not to present any noise problems. There are several places where the dog park could be placed, but most of the Commissioners favored the northern end, allowing the park to keep the basketball, picnic tables, child area, and other amenities.  The park is often used as an off-leash area right now. Formalizing this with fencing, shade, seating, and water (among other things) will only make it more appealing.

The next step will be to notify the people who live in the immediate area, and then a public hearing at the next PRC meeting which will be Sept 19 at 7 pm. The hearing is not restricted only to people from the immediate area, so anyone interested in having a dog park can show up and put their paw in.

VILLAGE POND PARK

September will be a busy month for the PRC. In addition to the public hearing on the dog park, the second meeting on Village Pond Park (VPP) will take place at the Beach and Tennis Club Clubhouse on Saturday, Sept 14, at 9:30 am. This meeting will be an opportunity to comment on the plans developed by Nuvis/Pace. As soon as the plans are available, you can read about it here.

HEALTHY CITY

Never at a loss to launch new initiates, the PRC enthusiastically supported the idea of making Lake Forest a “healthy city”. The staff was tasked with doing a little more research and then reporting back in October when the PRC is expected to formally adopt the program and appoint an Advisory Committee.

NORMANDALE

The PRC endorsed the idea of transforming the un-used Normandale Park area into a central recreation area for city-wide events. This project will take more work in the months ahead to develop a plan and a budget before it can be taken to the City Council.

CELEBRATING THE 4TH OF JULY

The PRC is also considering developing an “after parade” event to keep the 4th of July celebration going after the parade ends. The new event would take place at the new Sports Park, assuming it is ready by next year.
