Portola Hills Meeting Date Should Be Changed

Holding a meeting the night of the final presidential debate will reduce attendance, writes David Herzberg.

David Herzberg sent Lake Forest Patch the following letter to the editor:

This is an open letter to the City of Lake Forest.

I truly believe that October 22nd is an awful night to hold the Portola Hills Traffic Workshop II meeting.

This is the same night as the final Presidential Debate—our country is so polarized with this election that I believe a vast majority of the people who might attend the Traffic Workshop will stay home instead to watch the debate.

After all the work the City has been trying do to reach out to our community, the selection of the 22nd will backfire on City Hall and just create more mistrust.

I think the selection of this night is also a great disservice to all the work that Joe Foust (the independent traffic consultant hired by the City of Lake Forest) has been doing and shows a lack of regard for the residents of Portola Hills.

It reflects poorly on the planning abilities and integrity of City Staff.

The outcome of the Portola Hills meeting has significantly more impact to the Portola Hills residents' lives than the results of the debate or the results of the election. You can always record the debate. You can always watch a replay online somewhere.

I want to support Dave Herzberg's call for a new night for the discussion. I agree with Charles that we can record the debate and watch it afterwards, but Dave is right and many people will want to watch it "live". If it isn't too inconvenient, let's make it another night. On a related matter, why can't we record the meeting and post it on the website. The city now does that for Council meetings (something I proposed 6 years ago) and I think for important meetings like this, having a permanent video record for people who can't attend is a really good thing. Obviously we have the ability.

I wish I could have streamed the meeting on the 11th - I wasn't able to get to City hall, but would LOVE to have watched / participated via Skype!
