'The Hobbit' Truly is an Unexpected Journey

Hold onto your hats, kids; we're heading to Middle Earth again with Peter Jackson and company.

After years of waiting it's finally coming to theaters -- Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

Bilbo Baggins, a kicked-back, happy-go-lucky Hobbit, joins Gandolf the Grey and 13 dwarves on a dangerous quest to reclaim their homeland and their treasure from Smaug the dragon.

The film is a staggering 160 minutes. But unlike any of the "Lord of the Rings" films, it takes about an hour for anything to really get going.

Once it does, though, game on, with non-stop chase scenes and action sequences.

On the journey they run into every kind of creature imaginable. The problem is, most of them are CGI creations. That was a big misstep, I think. In the "Lord of the Rings" films most of the monsters were just guys in makeup, and there was a sense of presence. I was hoping for the same here.

GCI does work with Gollum (played by Andy Serkis). Gollum and Bilbo's game of riddles is a nice piece of character interaction between battle sequences.

Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Ian McKellen as Gandolf, and Richard Amitrage as the elf leader do a wonderful job of acting.

This film is a lot of fun to watch but it's not a great film as it never quite recaptures the charm of the "Lord of the Rings" films.

The Flick-O-Meter gives "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" a four out of five.

This film can be seen in 3D or 48 frames per second; it's really not worth paying the higher ticket price. Just go see it the regular way, at 24 frames per second. They've been doing it for decades, and it works just fine.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next two installments in the trilogy, and so should you.

Let me know what you think. Head to my Facebook page. It's called TheBrettside, and click Like.

Is Elijah Wood part of the cast?

Elijah Wood's character should not even be born yet. Did you read the book?

^Did you "even see the movie"? Yes, Elijah does make an appearance in the movie.

I've boycotted anything with Richard Armitage since he outed Valerie Plame and let Scooter Libby take the fall. Disgusting.

Ha! I interviewed Patrick Fitzgerald shortly after the prosecution of Scooter Libby was over. I am not so sure things were going well for him - he was now in LA, and the case was a counterfeit fashion bust called "Operation Bell Bottoms." No lie!

More on Fitzgerald here:
"My source at the Chicago Tribune claims that when Patrick Fiztgerald asked the Chicago Tribune to sit on the Thomas story, claiming it could put his life in danger, the Chicago Tribune refused. The Chicago Tribune told Mr Fitzgerald that they were going to run the story anyway. It was only when Patrick Fitzgerald told the Chicago Tribune that if they ran the story that it would affect the Presidential election did the Chicago Tribune agree not to run the story. My source at the Chicago Tribune confirmed this meant Obama..." http://illinoispaytoplay.com/

If you enjoy fantasy films, this should be on your holiday must-see film list! I enjoyed watching the film at Port Theater in CDM this past weekend - the perfect place to see it!

I like the Port Theater, too. I recently tried the luxury theater in Laguna Niguel -Cinépolis- it was awesome, you kick back in a luxury recliner and press a button to have a server bring you munchies or cocktails. I understand another one just opened up in Rancho Santa Margarita: http://ranchosantamargarita.patch.com/articles/it-s-showtime-at-cin-polis

I believe it is time we had representation that understands what it means to serve. Because, afterRead More all, isn't a House Member's job to serve the people of his/her district? And who understands service better than a former Marine Corps Colonel? I briefly met Colonel Raths yesterday and it is my belief that he is doing this for all the right reasons and will provide what has been missing in Congress for far too long---INTEGRITY, HONESTY, PATRIOTISM, SELFLESSNESS & SERVICE. And if I heard correctly, yesterday, he has already hired the best possible company, a company with an extremely innovative and intelligent leader, to run his campaign. This company will serve him well and when the facts come about about Greg Raths, the people of the 45th District will have the easiest choice at the polls in quite some time. This is the man who will do the right thing for his district 10 times out of 10. Go Greg! When you find out the amazingly wonderful things he has done for his country, there really is no choice.
