Alleged Fashion Island Gunman Suspected in Second Mall Shooting

Prosecutors say Marcos Sarinana Gurrola fired 54 rounds Saturday. He is also charged with a shooting at the mall in November 2011. He is being held without bail pending his arraignment, which has been continued to Jan. 11.

A 42-year-old security guard who was arrested Saturday for allegedly shooting more than 50 rounds outside a parking lot at Fashion Island may also be responsible for a shooting at the same place last November, the Orange County district attorney's office reported today.

Marcos Sarinana Gurrola of Garden Grove was charged with 54 felony counts of shooting at an occupied building and two felony counts of aggravated assault with sentencing enhancements for the use of a firearm, the D.A. reported. Gurrola was also charged with 10 felony counts of the negligent discharge of a firearm for a November 2011 shooting at the mall.

Gurrola's arraigment in Santa Ana was continued Tuesday until Jan. 11; he will be held without bail until then. He had been held on $250,000 bail, but Deputy District Attorney Robert Mestman had argued for no bail, according to the Orange County Register. If convicted on all counts, Gurrola would face a maximum 115 years in state prison, prosecutors said.

Gurrola is accused of parking his white Honda Civic in the Macy's parking lot at Fashion Island in Newport Beach at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Prosecutors said he got out of his car armed with a Glock .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun and six magazines and fired 54 rounds towards the Macy's building.

According to Newport Beach police, bicycle officers who patrol the area arrived to the scene quickly. Gurrola dropped his weapon and was taken into custody without incident.

Prosecutors said police recovered ammunition for different weapons including .44 caliber, .380 caliber, and .38 caliber.

No one was injured during the shooting, but a woman and her 4-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries from being pushed by panicked shoppers who ran when the gunshots rang out.

Newport Beach Police Deputy Chief David McGill told the Los Angeles Times Gurrola was "venting his life problems." Newport Beach police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said investigators are still working to determine a motive.

While investigating Saturday's shooting at Fashion Island, detectives linked Gurrola to another shooting. Authorities said Gurrola opened fire in a parking lot at Fashion Island on Nov. 16, 2011, shooting 10 rounds. At the time of that shooting no suspects were identified and no injuries were reported.

That makes about as much sense as anything else you've said.

JustUs, I figure the average Patch reader has a college degree in Orange County. I also figure they are pretty level-headed and don't cry "boogie man" every time they see a Latino surname in the press like you have here. In other words, I figure they see you for the truly disturbed and hateful fool you are in reality. I've just been drawing you out to see how you respond. It's sure been a model of politeness and analytical ability. Ya, sure, you bet.
