Driver Crashes into Hydrant and Flees

Sheriff's investigators are looking for the person whose SUV damaged a fire hydrant and flooded a Lake Forest street late Wednesday night.

A driver crashed into a fire hydrant, sending water shooting into the air at Copper Cliff Court and Toledo Lane in Lake Forest late Wednesday night.

The call came in at 11: 55 p.m., and by the time deputies arrived, the driver had fled the scene and a black Chevrolet SUV, said Orange County Sheriff Department Lt. Tim Rainwater.

Deputies found the SUV abandoned along with a geyser of water flooding the street. Firefighters were called to turn off the hydrant, said Rainwater. Although the vehicle’s airbag deployed during the crash, authorities do not know if the driver or passengers suffered any injuries.
