Jaguar Faced Red Light in Crash with Deputy

A Jaguar driver turned left toward Trabuco while "facing a red traffic signal" when he crashed with an Orange County Sheriff's deputy Monday afternoon, according to an initial report.

The accident at Alicia and Trabuco injured both drivers, according to the California Highway Patrol. A third man suffered minor smoke inhalation injuries after putting out the deputy's flaming wreck, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said.

"He ran across to the Mobil station to grab an extinguisher," Concialdi said.

The crash took place around 5:30 p.m., sending the Jaguar driver, a 67-year-old Mission Viejo man, to the hospital with moderate injuries, the CHP said.

The injured deputy was a 27-year-old from Aliso Viejo, the report said. He suffered minor injuries, Concialdi said.

All three men were taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

Both drivers were using safety equipment, according to the CHP report. Whether that includes seat belts is unclear from the initial report.

The deputy's speed at the intersection was not included in the initial report.
