Lake Forest Man Killed While Walking on 5 Freeway

CHP isn't sure why Richard Salgado, 21, was on the highway. Similar incident occurred in same spot a few weeks ago.

A 21-year-old Lake Forest man was killed early Saturday when multiple cars struck him on the northbound 5 Freeway in Lake Forest, authorities said.

Richard Salgado died after being hit just south of Lake Forest Drive around 1:22 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and the Orange County coroner's office. He had been walking across lanes heading west and was first hit by a 2003 Lexus sedan, then a white sedan and a dark pickup, according a statement by the CHP. The second and third vehicles fled the scene.

It's not yet known why Salgado was on the road or whether he had gotten out of a stalled vehicle.

The CHP issued a SigAlert and closed all northbound lanes for a period shortly after the accident.
