A collision involving a motorcyclist and a bicyclist shut down a portion of Santiago Canyon Road for about five hours Saturday.

The severity of the crash caused the Orange County Sheriff's Department's major accident reconstruction team to respond, which resulted in the northbound lane being closed at 11:57 a.m., 30 minutes after the initial 9-1-1 call.

The cyclist was not riding in a peloton, but was instead riding behind his son, according to OCSD Lt. Joe Balicki. "Initially, we thought it was going to be a double fatality," he said, though he indicated at 4:30 p.m. that both men were still alive.

The incident took place about a mile north of Cook's Corner, which is popular with motorcyclists.

Speaking of motorcycle accidents, any updates on how Deputy Africano is doing?

I noticed the flare residue on the way home from the great western fan belt toss in palm springs. I turn in on Ridgeline (JSO Modjeska), and judging by the residue, I figured something serious happened. Are any specifics available? Nice SAT vocab, peloton is.. Isn't that when cyclists bunch up into a wide v-shaped formation like birds do, often partially blocking a lane? If so, I appreciate the riders for staying single file (slip-streaming). Thankfully nobody died from this; it's always sad to hear of any fatalities (or injuries, for that matter) due to vehicular accidents. Pray for swift recoveries to all three!

MisturChips - "Peloton" is a group of many or a pack as you see in Tour de France but cyclists have no reason to form a wide V. That would not be safe on any road!

I agree, Inspector! This is why when I regularly see hordes of cyclists in a wide V-shaped pack, blocking JUST ENOUGH of the road for people to think it's safe to whiz-by at 55MPH, I sometiems shudder on my daily commute through Santiago Canyon...

I believe it is time we had representation that understands what it means to serve. Because, afterRead More all, isn't a House Member's job to serve the people of his/her district? And who understands service better than a former Marine Corps Colonel? I briefly met Colonel Raths yesterday and it is my belief that he is doing this for all the right reasons and will provide what has been missing in Congress for far too long---INTEGRITY, HONESTY, PATRIOTISM, SELFLESSNESS & SERVICE. And if I heard correctly, yesterday, he has already hired the best possible company, a company with an extremely innovative and intelligent leader, to run his campaign. This company will serve him well and when the facts come about about Greg Raths, the people of the 45th District will have the easiest choice at the polls in quite some time. This is the man who will do the right thing for his district 10 times out of 10. Go Greg! When you find out the amazingly wonderful things he has done for his country, there really is no choice.
