Update: Driver Who Struck Power Pole 'Fell Asleep'

The driver of a white pickup hit a power pole on El Toro Road at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

A driver who struck a power pole on westbound El Toro Road at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday told deputies that he fell asleep as he was driving eastbound, veering across the center median and three westbound lanes before hitting the pole and a wall behind it.

Neither the driver, identified as 47-year-old Armando Pineda, nor anyone else on the busy thoroughfare was injured. Pineda's city of residence was not available.

"It was just dumb luck he wasn't hurt and didn't hurt anyone else," Lake Forest Police Services Sgt. Angel Andrade said.

Pineda said he woke up after the white Ford F150 pickup he was driving sheared off part of the power pole, showering the street with chunks of wood, before burying itself in a five-foot retaining wall behind the pole.

He was the lone occupant in the vehicle, according to Andrade.

The westbound lanes of El Toro Road between Serrano Road and Toledo Way have been closed since the accident for repairs with Orange County Sheriff's Department personnel directing traffic in the area.

No power outages have been reported as a result of the accident.
