Resident Chases Down Alleged Hammer-Wielding Burglar

A resident chases and detains the 18-year-old alleged would-be burglar until police arrive to make the arrest.

An 18-year-old is in jail on suspicion of attempted burglary after a Lake Forest resident allegedly spotted him breaking into a vehicle and chased him down, authorities said.

At about 8:52 a.m. Sunday, the resident allegedly saw Giovanni Martinez using a hammer to break into a vehicle near Trabuco Road and Cherry Avenue.

Once spotted by the resident, Martinez fled, according to police.

The resident reportedly chased him into a Mission Viejo condo complex in the 22000 block of Via Cereza, where Martinez's pursuer caught him and detained him until police arrived.

Martinez was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and booked into jail on $20,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in a Newport Beach courtroom Tuesday.
