College Police: Rifles Needed to Keep the Peace

Rifles would help law enforcement keep the campus safe by being able to shoot at long-range targets instead of being limited to handguns, officers from the community college's police force said.

Southwestern College Police Department Chief Michael Cash has requested that law enforcement at the community college receive rifles in order to respond in the event of a shooting or other potential threats at the campus, The SWC Sun reported Wednesday.

“If I’m going to put my life on the line, I want to make sure that our people have the best equipment to stop whatever is going to come across, because if we don’t, we’re not of service to anyone here,” Cash told the newspaper.

Cash was hired as the college's new police chief in August.

Southwestern is the only college in the county that does not have rifles or Tasers, Sergeant Robert Sanchez told The Sun.

Some college employees believe the community's opinions should be sought before rifles come to the Chula Vista campus, and that other more likely public safety threats like earthquakes or fires should be addressed first.

Libi, Northern Illinois (2008), Virginia Tech, Columbine (High School 14-18 year olds), University of Texas (1969)...the list goes on and on. What the Chief is saying is this.."If you expect us to safely and quickly engage this type of threat then we need the tools to do so".

Campus police at SWC are POST trained fully credited police officers and not "security guards. All I can really write is, "better to have them and not them, than to need them and not have them"...... Side arms against an AR15 is a losing proposition. Lots of people will die, including officers who have familes as well. FULLY trained police officers who work both with Chula Vista PD AND SWC are a good investment. That's what we have. These guys are good at what they do and it is silly to compare them to security oficers.

Libi, they are not afraid of the people you mention here. It's the one who has a long trench coat, vacant stare and hiding two AR 15 long rifles with 800 rounds of ammo they tend to get a little nervous around. It wil be interesting to read these comments back IF the horrible situation happens and people are seriously hurt or lives are lost at SWC.
