Texting BMW Driver Allegedly Causes Crash, SigAlert

CHP issued a SigAlert for the 5 Freeway, following a two-car wreck at El Toro Road.

A two-car wreck on the northbound 5 Freeway tied up traffic for nearly an hour Saturday afternoon.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at El Toro Road shortly before 4 p.m. and cleared it at 4:44 p.m. Investigators were still working the scene after the road reopened.

The carpool lane along with the offramp and lanes 3, 4, 5 and 6 were closed for more than 30 minutes following a noninjury crash between two black SUVs.

According to the CHP incident log, a black SUV was stopped on the freeway after it was struck by a BMW SUV.

The driver of the BMW was texting when the accident occurred, a witness reported.

What is so frick'n important that people text while driving? There was a time when we didn't have cellphones.

There's been an effort to stop drunk driving for about 70 years. Has the effort been successful? Technology could be used to curb both drunk driving and distracted (texting) driving but it wouldn't be cheap to implement. It's a new risk in life. At least with drunk drivers, we can avoid driving during the "drunk hours" and reduce risk but we can't really minimize others' distracted driving.

Charles, sadly there is no such thing as "drunk hours". We have people on meth, on phones, lack-of-sleep...ect. The bottom line is we must all be alert, defensive drivers. It's called Driver's Ed. 101. Stay safe.

You can never be totally safe, but I have to agree with Charles; about the time "last call" rolls around, you know to be extra careful. However, texting inattentiveness can happen at anytime. My dad told me when I got my drivers license that my car was a weapon; it's a message worth remembering.

Some people are just plain selfish. I have always had the thinking that if you couldn't care less about the law and of your own safety, then go ahead and do as you please, but do not ever involve others! You are not the only driver on the road and a single mistake that you commit could cause inconvenience to many other innocent victims. I really hope the BMW SUV driver gets punished and learns from his mistake! The authorities should really come up more stringent measures on the correct usage of technology on the roads. - http://www.pmwltd.co.uk
