Two people leaving court Monday in Newport Beach after having their licenses suspended for drunken driving were arrested during a sting operation when deputies followed them to their vehicles as they tried to drive away, Orange County Sheriff's Department officials said Tuesday.
Deputies targeted suspected DUI drivers who had been told by a judge not to drive and/or had been previously notified their licenses were suspended for DUI.
Offenders were followed Monday by deputies at the Harbor Justice Center to make sure they would not drive away and utilize other means of transportation, according to a department statement.
Two people decided to drive away and were stopped and arrested by waiting deputies on a misdemeanor charge for driving on a suspended license. Their vehicles were impounded for 30 days.
"Those arrested could face additional jail time, long driver license suspensions, along with other financial hits including attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work and the potential loss of job or job prospects," according to a department statement.
