High-Speed Rail Back On Council Agenda

A discussion of the state's $9 billion high-speed rail proposal is on tap for Tuesday night at the Lake Forest City Council meeting.

A state issue is scheduled to get the local treatment Tuesday evening as the Lake Forest City Council takes a controversial bill under consideration.

The council, prompted by Mayor Pro Tem Scott Voigts, will discuss its stance on a bill that would essentially eliminate $9 billion set aside by California voters for the construction of a high-speed rail.

In 2008, voters approved a measure to fund part of the construction of a rail system from San Francisco to San Diego, but since then critics have fought to stop the project, citing concerns about its financial viability.

Voigts has said he wants the city to support the bill that could kill the rail proposal. Councilmen Peter Herzog and Mark Tettemer, however, have advocated remaining neutral in the matter.

The topic has not been hashed out fully as of yet because an administrative error delayed talks about the proposal from taking place at a March council meeting.

At its Tuesday evening meeting, the council will discuss whether to take a formal stance on the issue.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at , 25550 Commercentre Drive.
