Want to Run Lake Forest? Now's Your Chance

The period in which to receive and file paperwork from wannabe council candidates begins this week.

If you’ve been considering it, the time for action is at hand. The filing period to run for municipal office opened Monday. It ends Friday, Aug. 10. City Council candidate nomination papers are available for a pair of four-year terms.

The two seats up for election are currently held by council members and . Rudolph has already filed her nomination documents, signifying her intent to run for re-election. As of midday Thursday, Tettemer had not.

The takes place Nov. 6, coinciding with the presidential and state elections.

Candidates have until 5 p.m. Aug. 10 to file nomination documents and statements of qualification for office. The deadline extends to Aug. 15 if an incumbent decides not to run again and does not file papers by the deadline.

Candidates must be registered voters and live in Lake Forest. Nomination papers must be signed by at least 20 registered voters who reside in Lake Forest. Each candidate is required to file a “statement of economic interests,” disclosing investments and interests in real property when the nomination papers are returned for filing. There is no charge for filing nomination papers.

For a fee, candidates can also prepare a statement that includes name, age and occupation and a brief description of no more than 200 words about their education and qualifications, according to the city. The statement is filed with the nomination papers and is included in the sample ballot materials mailed to voters. The charge for this service is about $1,000.

The candidate's packet containing the nomination papers and related election materials needed to run for office are available at . All forms required for nomination and election to municipal office are furnished by and filed with the city clerk.

Appointments to obtain the candidate's packet and review the information with the city clerk are highly encouraged. The process takes about 45 minutes, according to Lake Forest City Clerk Stephanie Smith.

The clerk's office is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. City Hall is closed every other Friday. Click here to check the schedule.
