Money for thee but not for me

There is an event scheduled for November 16 that will probably be cancelled, or at least postponed until 2014, because of a lack of funds, three or four thousand dollars.

Lake Forest has adopted the 1st Law Enforcement Battalion, stationed at Camp Pendleton.  The ceremony was to happen at Heroes Park.  However, the Marine Corps says that because of budget cut backs it cannot afford the money to rent the buses to bring the Marines to the event.

When he was Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta frequently commuted from Washington, DC, where his office was, to his home in Monterey.  The estimated cost of this to the taxpayers was nearly a million dollars, at about $20,000 per trip.

Panetta only had to reimburse the government for coach fare for the trips, which was calculated at around $500.

For a political liberal, there is plenty of money for trivial trips (think about the Obama's 'date night' to NYC), but for recognition of a military unit, at a fraction of the cost, nada.
