22 Percent of El Toro High Still Without Booster Shot

The vaccine, intended to stop the spread of whooping cough, is required for students in grades seven through 12 by Oct. 7.

Even with Gov. Jerry Brown's deadline extension, significant percentages of the student population at local high schools has not yet shown proof of having gotten the Tdap booster shot, meant to stop the spread of whooping cough.

The numbers show that high school students are lagging behind their middle-school counterparts in bringing in proof of the vaccine, with Lake Forest's still waiting on about 22 percent of its students.

However, at , fewer than 1 percent of students still need to bring in proof of the shot.

As of Tuesday, these are the percentages of students at each middle and high school in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District who still need to bring in proof:

  • La Paz Intermediate School: 6.47 percent
  • Los Alisos Intermediate School: 6.55 percent
  • : 0.8 percent
  • Rancho Santa Margarita Intermediate School: 10.74 percent
  • : 22.23 percent
  • Laguna Hills High School: 7.28 percent 
  • Mission Viejo High School: 5.4 percent
  • Trabuco Hills High School: 21.5 percent
  • Silverado High School: 42.4 percent

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., eligible students and adults can get the booster shot for free.

Free Tdap immunizations are available for children ages 10-18 years who are uninsured or have Medi-Cal. Children must be accompanied by parent or guardian and have a current immunization record (“yellow card”).

The Tdap booster helps prevent tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). The vaccination can be obtained from your family physician, at local pharmacies or through the Orange County Health Care Agency.
