Serrano Sets Guinness World Record...With a Cherry on Top

The inaugural Spring Fling at Serrano Intermediate School drew hundreds of participants who set a new Guinness record for the longest, continuous ice cream sundae.

When Daria Navarro learned that students at Webster University in Missouri had broken the Guinness World Record for the longest ice cream sundae by nearly 50 feet with a new mark of 200 feet and 3 inches, she had her student planners add a lot more feet and a bunch more ice cream to the original plan.

No problem. Because the only thing better than making the world's longest, continuous ice cream sundae is eating one.

Hundreds of students, parents and community members jammed Serrano Intermediate School on a hot Sunday afternoon to participate in the world record attempt. And when the last of the whipped cream had been spread over a bed of vanilla ice cream and a dozen different type of toppings in an "S" (for Serrano) shaped configuration of rain gutters, they had set a new Guinness record.

The official mark, pending verification by the Guinness World Record committee, who will be receiving videotape and other visual evidence, should be listed at 222 feet, 9 3/4 inches.

"This turned out a lot better than I thought," said Lisa Pedroza, a teacher at Serrano, who brought her daughter Mia, 3, to participate in the record-setting event.

Dreyers provided the ice cream while Home Depot donated the rain gutters.
