Teachers Hit Firing Range After Newtown Shooting, School Trustee Says

A Capistrano Unified board member did target practice recently and says one out of five female newbies was a teacher.

In light of the tragedy in Newtown, some teachers may be going to firing ranges to learn how to shoot.

It’s anecdotal for sure, but when Capistrano Unified School District Trustee Anna Bryson – a self-proclaimed strong believer in the Second Amendment – went shooting earlier this month in Orange County, she talked to fellow women practicing their aim and made an intriguing discovery.

“One-fifth of the newly interested women who were there for instruction were teachers,” she wrote in a blog called Thoughtful Women.

Bryson has asked Capo schools to look into the feasibility of the district allowing employees to bring concealed weapons onto campuses, she told the Orange County Register

Neither Bryson nor a spokesman for the school district could be reached for comment.

Bryson writes:

… [M]ost of our public schools are gun-free zones, and people who would do evil are aware of this. Why should evildoers have a sense of comfort and unchecked power when they go on a school campus?

Wouldn’t it be better if they were wondering: Is there someone here who might stop me in my tracks before I can carry out my self-glorifying destruction?

But Bryson did acknowledge that local officials should be able to decide what’s best for their schools, rejecting a one-size-fits-all policy for disarmament or packing heat among teachers.

“We must preserve our rights and try local solutions, not sweeping utopian schemes. Only in this way will we preserve the families and friends that we love and the liberties we cherish,” she wrote.

Tiny, thank you for your salient observation. I am glad that you recognize the shortcomings of mfriedrich too. I appreciate your contribution.

Stick to the issues raised by the story and don't attack each other. Thank you.

Tiny, I said what I said based on some of the humorous responses from other LF Patch commenters that I've observed to JU's comments. I'll admit this is not "everybody", and understandably so.

There's no resistance by me to acknowledge that there is crime in Santa Ana and Anaheim. However, I would not characterize the situation(s) as "full of violence. Lethal violence." as you have decided to do.

PSJC ... 16 hours of training is "extensive"? http://bos.ocgov.com/legacy5/newsletters/pdf/2_CCW_permit_policy_January2009.pdf
