School Will Challenge World Record for Longest Sundae this Sunday

The inaugural "Spring Fling Family Event" at Serrano Intermediate School will feature an attempt by the community to build the world's longest, continuous ice cream sundae.

Have you ever dreamed of setting a Guinness World Record? Have you ever wondered what the longest ice cream sundae in the world would look and taste like?

You and your family will have a chance to do both this Sunday at the inaugural “Spring Fling Family Event” at Serrano Intermediate School in Lake Forest.

The highlight of the event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the campus, will be the attempt at a Guinness Book of World Record for the longest, continuous ice cream sundae. Tickets for the building and eating of the sundae are $10 and still available at the school, according to Daria Navarro, S.T.P.O president.

The current world record was set just a few weeks ago. On April 11, Webster University, in Webster Groves, MO, broke the old record of 152.2 feet with a sundae that measured a whopping 200.3 feet. Students built the epic sundae on a Slip n’ Slide using 456 pounds of vanilla ice cream, eight pounds of cherries and fourteen pounds of rainbow sprinkles.

While the Herculean effort by Webster University students might be difficult to beat, Navarro said that students and families are excited about giving it a try. They plan to use a rain gutter shaped in the form of an “S” to form the sundae.

The ice cream sundae event is expected to start at noon, but Navarro suggests that participants get there early to ensure a spot before tickets run out.

“I’ve been doing fundraisers for a long time, and I was tired of buying magazines and wrapping paper,” she said. “We wanted to try something different for the family and be creative.”

The Spring Fling will have food provided by local businesses and food trucks. The Bagel Shack will have donuts, coffee and juice, as well as bagels, while some of the gourmet food trucks include DOGZILLA! and Tacos Maria. There also will be a bake sale, root beer floats and, of course, ice cream.

As for things to do, there will be a rummage sale, sporting competitions and games, and a “Buy 1, Get 1 Free” Scholastic Book Fair.

Entertainment will be provided by band and orchestra performances, and a DJ.
