Editor's note: Patch is publishing each Saddleback Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees candidate's statement on file with the county Registrar of Voters office.

Order of publication is alphabetical, by last name. This is the statement voters will see on the ballot in November.

Candidate: Don Sedgwick

OCCUPATION: Governing Board Member, Saddleback Valley Unified School District

AGE: 47

With four children currently attending Saddleback schools, I have a vested interest in assuring our students receive a state-of-the-art education in a nurturing environment. Over the 16 years I have served you on the board, Saddleback students have consistently ranked near the top in the nation, academically, and experienced unparalleled success in music and athletics. Facilities have vastly improved.

With serious state financial threats looming, my business experience as a CEO will help to protect our children’s interests. We must dedicate our limited resources to the classroom. We should allow our students to receive full credit for passing UC-approved on-line courses, thus freeing up classroom space, and augmenting the breadth of courses we can offer them. We should annually survey our parents, teachers, and students togain greater perspective from those we serve.

As the Orange County representative to the state CSBA board, I will provide our area an important voice in making desperately needed changes at the state level. With your vote, we can continue to improve Saddleback schools, while working to change incoherent, unfair state policies. I grew up here, attended public schools. I care deeply about our community and our children. Please join me in strengthening them.

I believe it is time we had representation that understands what it means to serve. Because, afterRead More all, isn't a House Member's job to serve the people of his/her district? And who understands service better than a former Marine Corps Colonel? I briefly met Colonel Raths yesterday and it is my belief that he is doing this for all the right reasons and will provide what has been missing in Congress for far too long---INTEGRITY, HONESTY, PATRIOTISM, SELFLESSNESS & SERVICE. And if I heard correctly, yesterday, he has already hired the best possible company, a company with an extremely innovative and intelligent leader, to run his campaign. This company will serve him well and when the facts come about about Greg Raths, the people of the 45th District will have the easiest choice at the polls in quite some time. This is the man who will do the right thing for his district 10 times out of 10. Go Greg! When you find out the amazingly wonderful things he has done for his country, there really is no choice. Colonel Greg Raths USMC Retired for Congress, 2014.
