ET's Tinsley Set National Record in Victory

Junior quarterback completed 50 passes in a 42-35 victory over Villa Park.

The final numbers have been tabulated from El Toro's 42-35 nonleague victory Friday over Villa Park, and the Chargers weren't the only big winners.

Junior quarterback Trey Tinsley broke two Southern Section records and apparently one national record with his performance.

Tinsley passed 75 times and completed 50 passes—both marks better than anyone in Southern Section history. He totaled 512 yards and had six touchdowns and two interceptions.

The 50 completed passes appears to be a national record. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) lists 47 as the most passes completed in one football game, citing Grant Sherman's 2012 performance for Kenton (Ohio).

The 75 pass attempts ranks third all-time nationally. The record is held by Brian Kauffman of Maplewood (Minn.) Hill-Murray with 83 attempts in a 2001 game. That same year, Caleb Keese of Searcy Harding Academy in Arkansas passed 82 times. Tinsley is the only Californian in the top 10.

Through five games, Tinsley has completed 31.8 passes per game; should he maintain that pace, it would place him second nationally. The record is 35 per game, and second is 28.1.

The previous Southern Section record was held by John Uribe, who completed 47 of 68 passes for Santa Barbara in its 49-28 loss to Thousand Oaks in a 2008 playoff game. Uribe's 47 pass completions is not included in the NFHS record book.

Tinsley's predecessor at El Tor, Conner Manning, who set Orange County records for passing and is now at Utah, had highs of 46 of 68 a year ago in a 47-24 victory over Huntington Beach.

Tinsley has not attempted fewer than 36 passes this season. A week before the Villa Park game, he completed 39 of 56 for 362 yards and four touchdowns in a 50-28 loss to Palos Verdes.

In the victory over Villa Park, Tinsley connected with five receivers: Dominic Collins (18 receptions, 226 yards, 3 TDs), Taylor Dodds (11-125, 1 TD), Kaleb Fossum (10-54), Collin Kentros (7-67, 1 TD) and Brendan Lane (4-40, 1 TD).
