Redfield Withdraws USC Commitment

Mission Viejo's Max Redfield, one of the nation's top football recruits, says he is lining up trips to other Pac-12 schools.

USC may be used to getting what it wants when it comes to some of the preeminent high school football players in the country, but for the moment, the Trojans have lost their grip on Mission Viejo's Max Redfield.

Redfield, an outstanding two-way player who is considered the No. 2 athlete in the class of 2013 and the No. 37 player overall, has decided he may not attend USC after all.

ESPNLA reported that Redfield wrote this on his Facebook page: "Going back on my word is something I never imagined doing and it hurts me to do it but in the end I feel is necessary to do in order to decide what college I want to go to and in the end what path I want to take in life. For many different reasons I am choosing to decommit from USC and re-open recruiting. I am sorry to the people I might let down or hurt in this decision but it is a decision that is crucial for my future athletically, academically, and spiritually."

He apparently started second-guessing himself after a recruiting trip to Notre Dame in October, and now he has a recruiting trip scheduled for Washington and is likely to check out Oregon as well.

Redfield has led Mission Viejo to a 10-0 record this season. The Diablos begin the Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs on Friday against Westlake Village Westlake (6-4). Mission has reached the section semifinals the past three seasons.
