I first discovered sweet bread back in college. An ex-boyfriend who understood my craving for bread introduced it to me and since then, I've been in love.
Upon moving to Orange County, I've noticed that sweet bread isn't exactly easy to find, so imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon El Toro Bakery and Cake Shop (formerly Efren's Bakery), right in my backyard, thanks to a quick Yelp search.
Located behind the (near Raymond and El Toro), you'll find this bakery snuggled up in a deep corner. The smell of bread draws you in as you get closer and hugs you tight as you walk in.
Since it's in a small location, the heat from the oven can be overwhelming but don't let that deter you. You will notice several shelves of baked goods. My particular favorites, the sweet bread, are located immediately to your right. Ask for a bag from the counter and go wild making your selection.
Aside from sweet bread, El Toro Bakery and Cake Shop is also a full-service bake shop ideal for special-occasion cakes and treats. They also make challah! One caveat though—they're closed on Mondays, but are open every other day for your baked good needs. You will surely find me there with a few bags filled to the brim with my favorite breads as they pair well with masala chai tea (my other love).
If you're looking for a sweet bread fix, I recommend shopping Wednesdays for their buy one, get one free deal. This bake shop is my quick fix for sweet bread cravings.
