Soroptimist Fundraiser a Double Delight for Local Women

The Lake Forest club's annual "Bras for a Cause" fundraiser this Saturday will go toward paying for mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women under 40.

The Lake Forest chapter of Soroptimist International will be holding its fourth annual “Bras for a Cause” fundraiser this Saturday at the Norman P. Murray Community Center in Mission Viejo.

The Soroptimist Club is an organization of business and professional women volunteers who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities throughout the world.

The fundraiser’s theme this year is “Bras for a Cause Play on Words.” Sponsors are encouraged to decorate and submit bras that feature double-entendres. They will be displayed during the event. A few examples from last year include “Double Delight,” a bra made of sugar cones and candy, “Rio de Janeiro,” a bra made with stuffed animals, and “Tea Break,” which was made using English teabags.

“They are so incredibly creative. It is mind-boggling what people have done,” said Diane Ealy, vice president of public awareness for Soroptimist International of Lake Forest. “The bra entries this year are going to be just as funny as last year.”

Ealy said they expect around 200 women and girls for the event, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Murray Center. Along with dinner, there will be an opportunity drawing of $25 gift cards from local restaurants as well as a live and silent auction.

The Lake Forest Soroptimist’s hope to raise $40,000 from the event, which will go to the organization’s signature project this year—paying for mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women under 40.

“The YWCA has a program where they fund the mammograms for women over 40, but the ones under 40 are the ones that go under-serviced,” Ealy said. “We started that last year. We’re hoping to achieve that number, which in this economy might be difficult. But it is for a very worthwhile cause.”

Tickets are $45 per person. For more information go to www.silakeforest.org.
