• League play in football began on Friday and, in the South Coast League (one of the best leagues in America), got off to a dramatic start with Tesoro's 37-34 victory over Trabuco Hills. With only two automatic playoff berths in the five-team league, the game Friday pitting El Toro at Tesoro has huge implications; even though only two games in, a win by Tesoro will almost assure the Titans of at least second place and a trip to the Pac-5 Division postseason. League favorite Mission Viejo, the top-ranked team in Orange County, had a bye last week and will kick off its pursuit of a league title at home against San Clemente. In the Trinity League, Santa Margarita Catholic, coming off its worst home loss in school history to national power St. John Bosco, needs a win against Servite at Cerritos College before tackling Mater Dei the following week.

• Pre-registration is open through Oct. 16 for reduced $20 admission for a family history seminar conducted by the  South Orange County Genealogical Society. The event is at Mission Viejo City Hall. The theme is Settlers, Soldiers and Overcoming Brick Walls. The speaker is Lloyd Dewitt Bockstruck. For more details ,click here. The event is Saturday.

Will Helio Castroneves, who has won three Indy 500s and one Dancing With The Stars title, win his first championship? Or will Scott Dixon win his third championship? Former South OC resident Ryan Hunter-Reay is the defending series champion.
