Head's Up, Thru Sept. 1: Football Kicks Off, WWII Is Recalled

Worthwhile notes for Lake Forest-area residents.

By Martin Henderson

Taking a look at what's going down and coming up for residents in the Lake Forest area.

• High school football begins this week—it's technically called Zero Week but the State could do everyone a favor by calling it Week 1. On Friday, El Toro plays host to La Habra at Trabuco Hills High in one of the top games of the night. Other South Coast League teams are also busy: Tesoro plays host to La Mirada, Trabuco Hills plays at Dana Hills, San Clemente plays host to Long Beach Jordan, and Mission Viejo plays in Hawaii against Baldwin.

• There are no meetings at City Hall this week. No City Council, no Planning Commission, no Parks and Recreation. But there is a movement afoot to turn back the decision by the City to approve the Brookfield project at the newly rezoned Foothill Auto Centre—now destined for housing. That means you could run into someone trying to get your signature on a referendum; the group needs 4,000 by Sept. 19.

• Our Place at the corner of Muirlands and Ridge Route is certainly making an effort to become an entertainment hub in Lake Forest. Tonight is Open Microphone at 8 p.m., but before that it is offering its Mac 'N Cheese special. Wednesday is Spaghetti night and acoustic musician Jeff Nelsen. It also features live bands on Friday and Saturday nights. Keep an eye on the events calendar.

• Hear about history straight from those who lived it. Veterans of World War II will be at San Francisco Solano Catholic Church on Tuesday relaying their experiences and taking questions. It's recommended you bring a dish for the potluck at 6 p.m. Representatives of the Army, Navy and Marines will be present.

• Wednesday is Open House for businesses next door to each other, the iRead Academy and Eutonic Music School. It offers music, refreshments and fun. And it's free. Here are the details.

• Thursday begins a consignment sale at the Lake Forest Sun and Sail Club to benefit SoCal 4 Kids. The sale continues through Sunday, Sept. 1. Click here for important details.

• Friday is a campout at Etnies Skatepark celebrating the end of summer. Lots of fun activities, including midnight madness, are promised. Cost is $30 per person. Click here for details.

• Do you feel lucky this Labor Day? Sunday is a charity bingo marathon at the Elks Lodge in Mission Viejo. There's a $20 buy-in, and it begins at 8 a.m. Click here for more details.

• Today, Aug. 26, is National Dog Day, and also Women's Equality Day. Draw your own conclusions.
