Head's Up Thru Sept. 22: Free Self-Defense, Fitness and Scouts

Opportunities this week for Lake Forest-area residents.

A look at what's going down and coming up for Lake Forest and Foothill Ranch residents.

• If you have an interest in knowing what scouting is like Sunday will be a good day. Saddleback Valley Boy Scouts are presenting their Scout Expo at Oso Lake. It's an opportunity for parents and kids to see what being a scout is all about. It's for boys 10-17 years of age and girls 14-20. Click here for more details.

• Anyone looking to get into shape who needs incentive, besides living longer and looking and feeling better, might consider Compete Sports Performance this week. Beginning Tuesday, it is offering a free two-week trial. Is working out and getting fit for you? Here's your chance to get off the couch and find out without impacting your wallet.

• Adrenaline Lacrosse is signing up players for a box league that begins Wednesday. Click here for more details.

• The Save Lake Forest movement has more than 2,000 signatures, and had its biggest day of signups on Sunday at Taste of Lake Forest. But the deadline to reach 4,000 signatures is Thursday, 6 p.m. Can the grassroots movement to turn back residential development in the Foothill Auto Centre succeed? Follow its march through Jim Gardner's Blog and keep track of where you can sign up on the Facebook page.

• The local football season continues for El Toro (1-2), which is coming off a tough, mistake-riddled loss to Corona del Mar, 24-21. On Friday, the Chargers play in Palos Verdes Estates against Palos Verdes (1-2), the defending Northern Division III champion. Palos Verdes should be pretty focused following its 34-33 loss to Newport Harbor on Friday.

• Newly branded UFC Gym RSM is offering women a self-defense class and Mixed Martial Arts seminar on Saturday at the Rancho Santa Margarita location. Each two-hour class is free, but the gym is accepting $10 donations for Laura's House. The classes will be taught by Razor Rob McCullough, a former champion who trains out of Huntington Beach. Self-defense is at 10 a.m., MMA at 1:30 p.m. Click here for more details.

• Don't be caught off guard in the event of an emergency in Orange County, whether it's earthquake, wildfire or other event. Register this week for the AlertOC test, which takes place next week (Sept. 24). Don't wait to the last minute, or wait until it's too late, to get onboard an emergency information tool that may save your life or your property.
