Until more facts would be shared on this, one might assume that his "mental illness" was a…Read More form of deep depression. But depression is often only one symptom that coincides with several other symptoms under a more complex mental illness type (ex. schizophrenia, etc.).
I'm hoping that homosexuality wasn't considered the "mental illness" in this case. Unfortunately, in many religious families in the United States "mental illness" still appears to be the preferred category under which to compartmentalize homosexuality.
Shripathi Kamath April 15, 2013 at 02:44 pm
At some point someone in the responsible media will seek confirmation: "what form(s) of mental…Read More illness(es) did Matthew actually suffer from?" In other words, what was the medical diagnosis. Surely it is not a matter of "respecting the family's privacy" at this point.
"The same advances are possible for mental illness. The public will is there."
Until one has to fund such. Then it becomes about mooching, welfare, socialism, governmental influence etc.
Shripathi Kamath April 15, 2013 at 02:40 pm
Are you also absolutely disgusted at Rick Warren and his ilk when they lash out against homosexuals…Read More and homosexuality, particularly when gay teens commit suicide out of despair having suffered the concerted effort to demonize them and their behavior?
"I am so afraid of what this country is coming to when I hear about how awful people can be. "
Yes, it helps though when you close your eyes to gay teens committing suicide and instead choose to make martyrs out of the perpetrators.
Again, no one should have to suffer the pain of losing one's offspring -- not the Warrens, not the ones you hate or love.
The Warrens' grief was not caused by anyone else. Their kid allegedly had a mental illness and in a moment of despair he killed himself.
But there are those whose grief has been contributed by Warren and his ilk. Perhaps his supporters would be mindful of those as well.

I won't visit that Petco and I'm not surprised this happened. But, so very sad. What is wrong with…Read More people. I'll post the flyer on FB and get the word out.....((((((Hali and Georgia)))))))). I'd look in the surrounding neighborhoods to that store. I'm thinking the worst and hoping for the best.

We love Rick and Kay Warren; and we hurt because they are hurting. Since we have utmost respect and…Read More honor for them, we find it difficult to hear the periodic mean-spirited comments made by some; mostly, ill-informed individuals. Rationale thinking says that any tragedy in the life of any person or family demands compassion from others--not railing. If we were able to collect the supportive notes and letters for the Warren family and compare them to those who are lacking kindness and empathy, I believe the clear message would be sent--Rick and Kay Warren are dearly loved and the presence of God is their strength.

You seem you have a lot of anger for this Preacher of the Gospel! Tragedy is tragedy! Why…Read More persecution for this man? He made nobody to choose life or death , they had a free will , Its unfortunate they choose death, Suicide spirit is at and all time high, more military men and women have committed suicide the last couple years more than anytime in history ! Dont blame a man! Choices are made individually! our prayers should be for all that are hurting!

What a treasure Lake Forest has in Heritage Hill Historical Park. I have been a member of the…Read More Amigos de la Colina docent group since 1987 (although I now live in Washington State) and I want to thank Patch for showing such a wonderful video of Rancho Days Fiesta. It made me so proud, homesick, and glad that I'm coming back in a few more weeks for a vacation -- and a trip to Heritage Hill.

Now imagine we have 12,000+ more people living in the City, many of whom will also want to use the…Read More Post Office (and the library, and the DMV, etc). With reduced hours and more people, the current situation which can be bad at various times of the day will only get worse. Much worse.
In their desire to let the developers build 4,000 additional homes, the City never examined the impact of the 12,000 + new people on accessibility and use of existing public resources, like the post office. We were headed for a problem even if the post office hadn't cut back on service. Now we will have an even worse problem.
The City should lobby the post office officials and see if we can restore the lost hours. No other city is increasing their population by 15%+ in the immediate future, so perhaps an exception can be made. It's worth a try.

BTW - Who is verifying these "low income" families? I have seen seventh graders pay twenty-five cents, or nothing at all, for their lunch and pull a brand new smart phone out of their pocket. Just sayin'... New phones, clean clothes, fancy sneakers, etc. - it surely must all be donated to these families.
Doesn't matter what they serve the kids in school - it gets picked over and thrown into the trash without a single bite taken. Healthy? I have seen kids peel off the cheese and pepperoni and just eat the bread crust. High school students head off to fast food (Del Taco, Taco Bell, Chipotle, Pizza Hut...) for lunch.
JustUs March 17, 2013 at 01:59 am
What am I missing here? It's been my understanding that low-income or 'poor' families get food…Read More stamps. Those are good at all grocery stores, right? What's wrong with brown bagging it like we used to do as kid? How hard it is to put a ham sandwich w/lettuce, mayo and tomato, an apple, a couple oatmeal cookies and a bottle of juice in a bag or a lunch pail? We used to have some really cool lunch pails. Do they make those anymore? Why do we have to have full-serve restaurants in every school? All the kids I grew up with brown bagged it and we grew up healthy and strong. If parents are so uneducated that they don't know what to feed their own kids then the schools should have a nutrition class for parents who need the help. But schools should be places to learn - not short order restaurants.

"Kind of hard to elect an Argentine without some Italian in the mix somewhere."
He's a…Read More full-blooded Italian.
As I said, I hope they don't package him up as the "First Hispanic Pope" once he eventually comes to America. That would be very deceptive and underhanded IMO. It's better to be up front with people instead of pulling the wool over their eyes. Even if some aren't aren't citizens. It's not fair to those who are underinformed.

Lots of Italians and Germans came to Argentina over the last 100 years.

Yes, I concur. The Catholics finally made a smart move and covered all bases that can only help…Read More their Church. If he comes to Southern Cal Pope Francis will probably be marketed as the first "hispanic Pope" when in reality he's really not at all. And when he visits Italy he will be heralded for his Italian blood, which, of course, is true. I have no idea why they elevated Ratzinger, a German, to Pope. It only drew attention to the fact that the Vatican indirectly supported the Third Reich in WW2. And that was really a dumb move IMO. It's vital for religions to play world politics to grow or to sustain power. And they gain synergism when they work in cooperation with elite governments. Naturally, you've heard the phrase "the cross and the sword" before. Instead of looking at this just from a spiritual or religious point of view it's important to look at it from a power play perspective. After all, it's all about power and domination at the end of the day. It's just a matter of how large organizations sell themselves to the public that determine how successful they are. One thing is for sure. If he comes to So. California I will make sure I steer clear of all streets within 5 square miles of where he's at. It will be like a parking lot. Many people regard him as the next best thing to Jesus. Wouldn't it be cool if he went down to Venice Beach and walked on water with the help of some Hollywood special effects people?

The Chargers got back in the game by attacking the basket -- almost half their points came from the…Read More free throw line -- and using the press. But when they made their run to cut the 17-point deficit to three, they knocked down back-to-back three point shots (and followed with a three-point play). The problem is that high school athletes aren't used to shooting in an arena environment: they're used to seeing a backdrop. Shooting percentages almost always go down in an arena but as Coach Dixon said, he has to coach to the team's strength, and he's got a bunch of guard-sized shooters.
