Expert: San Onofre's Leak Problems Run Deep

An analyst hired by environmentalists says the steps being taken by Southern California Edison won't work.

San Onofre could be on ice for 18 months before technicians finally fix the faulty  generators that leaked radioactive steam in January, according to a report issued Tuesday by Fairewinds Associates, an energy consulting firm hired by an anti-nuclear group. "The damaged steam generators ... require major modifications with repair and outage time that could last more than 18 months if [Southern California] Edison and [generator manufacturer] Mitsubishi are even able to repair these faulty designed steam generators," the report states. The report, commissioned by the environmental group Friends of the Earth, said replacing the steam generators is the only real solution to the problem. Written by Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds, the analysis …

Pho Majestic Dishes Out Memories of Childhood

A first-time restaurateur opens a Vietnamese restaurant in Lake Forest focused on pho, perhaps the country's most well-known dish.

Last September, Charlie Tran was trying to get to Aliso Viejo. But after a couple of fortuitous wrong turns, he ended up on Trabuco Way and stumbled onto a shopping center at the road's Lake Forest Drive intersection that seemed like the perfect home for his dream restaurant. These dreams recently came to fruition with the grand opening of Pho Majestic, a new addition to the Lake Forest scene that offers an array of Vietnamese food straight from Tran’s childhood memories. “My goal for opening the restaurant is to bring Vietnamese [food] to Lake Forest,” Tran said. “It’s hard work, but my favorite part is when I bring someone food, like a bowl of soup, and their facial expression says it all.” Tran bought the site, Suite 114 at 21771 Lake …

An Orange County man living in Florida was arrested with 31 men in an online child predator sting operated by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

An Irvine native is among a group of men facing child predator charges in a large online sex sting operated by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office of Florida. Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight at a Monday afternoon press conference announced the results of the first-ever online child predator sting carried out by the sheriff’s office, which lasted six days. The sting included 21-year-old Kevin Williams, of 25 Seton Road, Irvine, who is listed as a student at Eckerd College in Pinellas County, FL. “I think this operation illustrates how vulnerable our kids are,” Knight said. “And to parents, guardians of children — we live in a different era now than what we grew up in. I cannot express how important it is to have parents and guardians to…

Joel - Ok, the one thing I cannot seem to get a clear answer on is exactly what is being written off as an expense. Is this whole debate over whether the oil companies are using LIFO or FIFO cost accounting methods, or are they allowed under the tax code to write off imaginary expenses (aka subsidy). I am with you on everything except this: "The hole now has a million dollars less gold in it, so …   more ›

Sun & Sail Chimney To Get 4-Foot Addition

The taller faux structure, which will hide a new set of wireless antennas, should improve surrounding wireless signals for AT&T customers.

The Sun & Sail Club Homeowner’s Association will raise an existing faux chimney by 4 feet in order to improve wireless network coverage in the surrounding area. According to AT&T, it will improve service for subscribers in the area, off of Toledo Way and Lake Forest Drive. A city commission approved the request at a Thursday evening meeting. “The chimney will not be noticeable unless you remove the surrounding trees,” said Planning Commissioner David Carter. The soon-to-be 48-foot 5-inch faux chimney is surrounded by pine trees and is considered to be a “stealth component” to the residential area. Although the measure was approved, the Planning Commission first discussed the potential aesthetic concerns of raising the already tall …

Nonprofit Business Mentors Seek Volunteers

The Orange County chapter of a nationwide nonprofit that assists small businesses is recruiting volunteers.

After 45 years accumulating business experience, Lake Forest resident Dennis Wright decided to stay engaged after his retirement by sharing that knowledge with others. "You miss the day-to-day action of being in business," he said. "You can only mow the lawn and play golf so many times." So about three years ago, Wright joined the approximately 100 active members of the Orange County chapter of SCORE, a nonprofit connected with the U.S. Small Business Administration run almost exclusively by volunteers. "I wanted to do something that would allow me to stay engaged in business and the idea of being able to share what I've learned with other people has been very rewarding," he said. The chapter—the largest in the nationwide network—offers …

The city's Planning Commission convenes for its first May meeting 7 p.m. Thursday.

The business, Primus Sports Performance, plans to use the facility at 20451 James Bay Circle to train athletes from 12 to 18 years of age who play on competitive softball and baseball teams. Primus Sports would provide lessons for individuals and team training sessions by appointment only, seven days a week. While the building has batting cages, they are not for public recreational use. The city's Planning Commission will consider the business' plan at its Thursday evening meeting. Also on the commission's agenda is a proposal to raise by four feet a faux chimney on the Sun & Sail Club Homeowner's Association …
