Head's Up, Aug. 27: Victim ID'd, World War II Vets Talk

Worthwhile notes for Lake Forest-area residents.

By Martin Henderson

Taking a look at what's going down and coming up for residents in the Lake Forest area.

• The Orange County Coroner has identified the 21-year-old victim of a single-car crash as Cole Smith of Foothill Ranch. Smith died when his SUV rolled over on the 241 in Irvine.

• It's Tuesday, a night when City Hall is usually busy. But there are no meetings at City Hall this week. No City Council, no Planning Commission, no Parks and Recreation. But there is a movement afoot to turn back the decision by the City to approve the Brookfield project at the newly rezoned Foothill Auto Centre—now destined for housing. That means you could run into someone trying to get your signature on a referendum; the group needs 4,000 by Sept. 19. For those of you asking: the Facebook page is here.

• Looking for something really interesting to do tonight? Hear about history straight from those who lived it. Veterans of World War II will be at San Francisco Solano Catholic Church on Tuesday relaying their experiences and taking questions. It's recommended you bring a dish for the potluck at 6 p.m. Representatives of the Army, Navy and Marines will be present.

• How much is too much and how much is just right when it comes to a babysitter? Consider that question and your reasonable options in Smart Spending's "What's the Going Rate for A Babysitter."

• The Photo of the Day will take you inside a local location. And when we say inside, we mean right through the walls.

• Protesters against the development of the Foothill Auto Centre have compared the situation to the proposed Saddle Crest development north of Cook's Corner because it didn't provide a study of its effects on local traffic, vegetation and wildlife. See for yourself if they have a chance. Obviously, local residents don't want the county to pursue the matter further.

• Rec 'N Roll is winding down for the summer. This is Water Week. Rimgate Park is the site of the Rec 'N Roll crew today, 10 a.m., and El Toro Park at 1:30. It hits two parks per day; Concourse and Cherry parks on Wednesday, Alton and Foothill Ranch Community parks on Thursday. Click here for more information.
