Head's Up, Aug. 28: Commission Race, Moonstruck

Worthwhile notes for Lake Forest-area residents.

By Martin Henderson

Taking a look at what's going down and coming up for residents in the Lake Forest area.

• The City Council will be on the spot in less than a week when it appoints a new planning commissioner to replace Tim Hughes, who was critical of the council's previous choices. Jim Gardner takes a look at the list of applicants and breaks down the likeliest choices of the 15 candidates. Will the Council pick from Gardner's list, or go another direction?

• There's a double dose of the Photo of the Day. Turns out two people took the same picture at about the same time last week. What are the odds? Must be something in the air.

• It's late in the barbecue season but with Labor Day this weekend, this bit of information could come in handy: How to throw a barbecue for less than $100.

• Tonight at Our Place, at Muirlands and Ridge Route, it's Spaghetti night and acoustic musician Jeff Nelsen.

• Today is Open House for businesses next door to each other, the iRead Academy and Eutonic Music School. It offers music, refreshments and fun. And it's free. Here are the details. It's at 3 p.m.

• Adrenaline Lacrosse is conducting signups for the Orange County Box League. Click here for details

• Here’s today’s line-up for the opening day of the West Coast Film Festival at the Regency Theater in San Juan Capistrano: 3 p.m., In The Good Old Summertime; 5:30 p.m., Pale Rider; 8 p.m., Eastwood Directs: The Untold Story (Premiere). According to IMBd, the Eastwood documentary highlights the more the 40 movies that Clint Eastwood has made. It explores his style of direction and features comments from people with whom he has worked.
Followed by an after party at Rick's Cafe for appetizers and a no-host bar. You can buy tickets here.
