Car Falls Off Barranca Onto Interstate 5

The unidentified male driver died at the scene.

A speeding vehicle crashed off an overpass in Irvine, dropped onto the Santa Ana (5) Freeway and burst into flames, killing the man behind the wheel, authorities said early Monday morning.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the California Highway Patrol reported.

There was only one person in the vehicle, a man, Supervising Deputy Orange County Coroner Larry Esslinger said.

The vehicle flew off the Barranca Parkway bridge and onto the freeway's southbound lanes around 11:10 p.m. Sunday, a news photographer reported from the scene.

The Irvine Police Department was investigating the crash. The driver's identity was not immediately released.
