Rainy Weekend Brings False Alarms and Real Crashes

"People don't know how to drive in the rain," says Deputy Rich Nelson.

Take a look at the Orange County Sheriff's Department blotter for Lake Forest, and you'll see a slew of calls to the cops about burglary alarms in Lake Forest, with seven in the last 30 hours alone.

Was there a deluge of crime over this past weekend?

Not really, said Deputy Richard Nelson. Just a regular deluge.

"Normally when there's rain or wind, it happens," said Nelson, the spokesman for Lake Forest's police services. "Some door alarms on commercial businesses or residences, they're sensitive to movement."

He added that many burglars do take advantage of wet weather, when they're less likely to be heard and noticed smashing windows. But it doesn't look like that was the case this past weekend; as far as Nelson knows, all burglary alarms were false alarms.

The rain also brought an elevated number of car accidents, Nelson said. He didn't have concrete statistics on how many, though, because most incidents don't get reported. One thing's for sure, though, Nelson said: "People don't know how to drive in the rain."

Nelson also said cops made three driving-under-the-influence arrests in Lake Forest last weekend—and two of the arrests came from one collision.

"Funny story," Nelson said. "One person was DUI and ran a red light and crashed into someone who had a green light and was DUI. I arrested the two of them together."
