Video: Passersby Fight Residential Fire on Larkwood Lane (Warning: Vulgar Language)

A 16-year-old O.C. Fire Authority Explorer used a neighbor's extinguisher on the blaze as residents grabbed hoses.

Mission Viejo High School students Jake Kalin, 16, and Kyle Mooney, 17, said they were driving on Los Alisos Boulevard Monday afternoon to golf team practice when they spotted smoke on nearby Larkwood Lane.

They drove up to find a fire burning between two homes.

Sophie Smith, a resident across the street from the homes, was standing by with a fire extinguisher. She handed it over to Kalin, who identified himself as a participant in the Orange County Fire Authority's Explorers program, which teaches and trains teens interested in firefighting.

The first video above was shot by Mooney and depicts the flames and what happened when Kalin used the extinguisher on them, along with neighbors and residents with hoses.

When firefighters arrived on the scene at 2:30 p.m.—five minutes after receiving  the 911 call—they noticed the color of smoke, indicating that an extinguisher had been used, said Battalion Chief Roger James.

The firefighters extinguished the flames by 2:34 p.m., James said. No one was harmed, though the homes were damaged.

Afterward, when told of what Kalin and Mooney had done, he went over and shook their hands. "I appreciate you guys doing that," he said.

The second video above is an interview with Smith, Kalin and Mooney about what happened.
