Councilman Herzog Responds to 'Gutless' Fliers Calling for His Resignation

Herzog pleaded no contest in May to a November 2012 incident in which he was charged with DUI, after being stopped by police and found to have a blood alcohol level more than 0.08.

Last week, before the Lake Forest City Council meeting, two women handed out fliers outside City Hall, attacking Herzog for a 2012 DUI arrest, among other issues. It was unclear who paid for the glossy flyers. No organization's name was printed on them and the women handing them out wouldn't say who hired them or if they volunteered.

Now, Herzog, the longtime councilmember, has responded to the fliers, calling them "gutless," and "pure politics at its worst," according to the Orange County Register.

"The bottom line is when people stoop to character assassination it means that they've conceded that I'm right on the facts, policies and the law," he told the newspaper. "They've stooped to an all-time low. To be so cowardly as to not identify who's doing it just shows how pathetic the whole thing is."

Earlier this year, the former six-term mayor spoke about the incident: “We all make mistakes in life and it’s how you respond to the mistakes in life that counts. I’ve never professed to be perfect, and I don’t think anybody is. It's a unique situation. It's not going to happen again."

Herzog has support on the council from at least one other member, Dwight Robinson, who told the Orange County Register he was "dismayed" by the handout.

"I was disgusted that that would even occur," Robinson told the newspaper. "First of all, it's such an old topic, something that happened a lot time ago. Why it would be brought up at this point makes no sense. I'm just disappointed...That's not what we should be talking about right now. There's no reason for it."
