Scouts to Install City Hall Flag Drop Box

A local Cub Scout pack is installing a box inside City Hall for American flags that are no longer serviceable.

A local Cub Scout pack plans to install a flag drop box at Lake Forest City Hall for torn or faded American flags.

Such flags, which must be destroyed in a dignified manner under the United States Flag Code, are often disposed of in a formal flag ceremony conducted by a group such as a Boy Scout troop.

Those flags are often collected in mailbox-like boxes like one the pack plans to purchase for the city.

"What we'd like to do is give residents a chance to [drop off flags for retirement] here at City Hall," said Steven Agor, with Cub Scout Pack 765.

On Tuesday the City Council unanimously approved Agor's request to work with city staffers to get the drop box installed.

The Cub Scout pack, hosted by , plans to raise the money to buy, paint and install the box. Agor estimated the cost would be about $500 for the drop box itself, and another $100 to $200 for paint and installation.

As Agor's presentation concluded, pledged to kick in $100 toward the project.

The drop box will function as collection point for flags that local scouting groups will dispose of in formal ceremonies, Agor said Tuesday evening.
