One Minute to Help Japan at El Toro High Fundraiser Friday Morning

"1 Minute Charger Collection" will take place during third period.

In the wake of last week’s devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, students at will open their wallets Friday morning for a unique fundraiser: the 1 Minute Charger Collection.

During third period, all students in the school will see a special video about the earthquake in Japan, which will end with a one-minute countdown. During those 60 seconds, students and teachers will be asked to donate spare change, bills or checks that the school will then give to the relief effort in Japan.

“We’ve done one-minute drives before, and it’s pretty impressive,” said ETHS activities director Kathryn Scheidler. “Sometimes you get as much in one minute as if you spent the whole week collecting money. People have been asking, ‘What can we do for Japan?’ It makes the kids and the staff feel better knowing they’re doing something to help.”

The coin drive is being organized by Associated Student Body representatives and will take place at about 9:35 a.m. The proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross, Scheidler said.
